GBC Metals, LLC, doing business as Olin Brass, utilizes more than 60 different copper-based alloys to produce specialized sheet and strip products for a variety of end uses. Primary markets for our high-performance products include automotive, microelectronic, and communication interconnects, as well as a long history in the supply of standard alloys in the manufacture of ammunition, coinage, and builders’ hardware.  We draw strength and success from the dedication of our employees, many of whom have spent decades working in our industry. We currently have an opportunity for a Process Engineer at our East Alton, Illinois, facility.

Responsibilities

Purpose of Role

Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods for complex metal manufacturing processes, such as casting, rolling, annealing, and slitting of copper and brass products. Apply knowledge of products, processes, production methods, equipment capabilities and quality control standards to meet or exceed customer requirements and manufacturing cost reduction goals.  A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.  Manage all aspects of the process quality system and metallurgical testing.  

 

Core Accountabilities

  • Responsible for driving a quality culture via implementation of Process Management principles by actively identifying and developing KIV/KOV relationships and associated system implementation including communication plans and control charting.
  • Identify improvements to our ISO 9001 quality management system while supporting prescribed requirements especially in the areas of prevention, correction, document control, and continuous improvement. Support the systems via Layered Process Audit requirements as well as maintenance and improvement of process SOPs.
  • Utilization and coaching of statistical analysis for data driven problem solving. Work collaboratively with the Product Metallurgist and production personnel to support root cause analysis investigations to address quality and process problems.  
  • Continually develop and support systems that drive efficient, consistent disposition of non-conforming product. Communicate and revise process and product reactions related to outcomes.  
  • Assist maintenance by supporting equipment related improvements including operator checklists, FMEA development, PM needs and other tools to drive improved equipment performance.
  • Support initiatives established by both the General Plant Manager and Quality and PE manager that support company objectives including MOS and cost reductions.  
  • Work with safety in mind at all times. Lead by example via safe behaviors, confronting potential safety issues and active involvement in proactive identification of improvements. Understand and support the VPP process.  

Qualifications

Competencies and Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical or Material Science or Mechanical Engineering degree is highly preferred;
  2. Minimum of 5 years' metals manufacturing experience;
  3. Familiar with manufacturing, safety and quality concepts, practices and procedures;
  4. Strong communication and organizational skills;
  5. Six sigma green belt certification preferred.
